Fine combed cashmere yarns

by Feb 20, 2024Cashmere

A few days ago we talked about worsted spinning, now let’s talk about worsted Cashmere yarns.

Combed yarns are made from very fine and long fibers and generally, for this very reason, they are made very fine, as the long fiber is much more resistant.

In our warehouse we have combed yarns in various fine counts, Nm. 2/36, 2/42, 2/45, 2/48, 2/52, 2/60 and even 2/120.

What does it mean?

Let’s take a small example.

I would like to point out that when you find the “Nm” (Numeric Metric) symbol in front of a yarn count, you must add 3 zeros to the figure after the /.

For example Nm. 2/36 will be title 2/36000.

Doesn’t this also tell you anything? This is nothing other than the method for establishing the length of the yarn, from which the fineness is obtained.

Unfortunately, the fineness of the yarn cannot be measured with the gauge, as it has too little thickness. An instrument would be needed that only some of the largest industries can afford and therefore the fineness or count of the yarn is measured in metres.

Naturally, the more meters there are, the finer it will be, and vice versa, the fewer meters there are, the thicker it will be. From this, those who are in the trade or in any case have some experience with yarns can also establish what type of knitting machine or what fineness of needles or crochet hooks can be worked with.

We then return to our Nm. 2/36 yarn to establish its length. We know that Nm 2/36 corresponds to the count 2/36000 and we know that the first digit, the one to the left of the / is the number of ends from which the yarn is made/twisted, in this case it is a 2-ply twisted yarn garments, while the figure to the right of the / is the number of meters of one strand of yarn in 1 kilogram (1 kilogram is always taken as a standard weight unit), therefore 1 kg of yarn in 2 strands 36,000 meters long each. The 2/36000 yarn will therefore be 1 kg of yarn 18000 meters long.

Let’s see the length of the other yarns mentioned, starting from the assumption that each one is in the quantity of 1 kg, let’s simplify:

Nm 2/36 = 36000:2 = 18000 meters in 1 kg of yarn
Nm 2/42 = 42000:2 = 21000 meters in 1 kg
Nm 2/45 = 45000:2 = 22500 meters in 1 kg
Nm 2/48 = 48000:2 = 24000 meters in 1 kg
Nm 2/52 = 52000:2 = 26000 meters in 1 kg
Nm 2/60 = 60000:2 = 30000 meters in 1 kg
Nm 2/120 = 120000:2 = 60000 meters in 1 kg

These yarns are worked with knitting machines from gauge 14 to gauge 20, therefore very fine. We generally produce women’s knitwear or women’s accessories such as scarves, shawls and hats. A simple crew neck women’s sweater, worked in stockinette stitch, can weigh from 90 to 150 grams, therefore very light.

These yarns can also be worked by hand and have a lot of yield, you need to have a lot of patience to combine them with multiple ends.
