Knitted Garments vs. Cut-and-Sew Jersey – What’s the Difference?

by Aug 2, 2025Knitting

Many people use the term “knitwear” loosely, but there’s a big difference between true knitwear and garments made from jersey fabric like t-shirts.

🔹 Knitted Garments (Fully Fashioned Knitwear)
These are made using knitting machines that knit each piece of the garment (front, back, sleeves) directly from the yarn. The pieces are shaped during knitting, then linked or sewn together. This process allows for seamless shaping, better fit, and full use of high-quality yarns like cashmere or wool.
➡️ This is the technique we use – it’s artisanal, precise, and allows for a luxurious finish.

🔹 Cut-and-Sew (Jersey Fabric)
In this method, a large roll of pre-made jersey fabric (usually cotton or synthetic blends) is cut into shapes and then sewn together – like how t-shirts are made. The fabric is usually made on industrial circular machines and lacks the structure and detail of real knitwear.
➡️ It’s cheaper, faster, and common in mass production, but it’s not comparable to true knitwear in quality or craftsmanship.

In short:
Our garments are not made from fabric, but knitted directly from the yarn, using knitting machines just like a handmade sweater – only more precise. This is real knitwear, not fabric sewn into shape.
