How to Hand Knit Machine Yarn

by Sep 8, 2025Knitting

IMG 6370Precious machine yarns, such as cashmere, yak, or camel hair, can also be easily knitted by hand, using multiple plies.

With a 500g cone of 2/28000 count cashmere, which is generally knitted on a 12-gauge machine or a 7-8-gauge machine with two plies, you can also experiment with knitting it with multiple plies.

Accessories, for example, require little yarn; with a 500g cone of cashmere, you can create various accessories, depending on how many plies you knit.

You can make one accessory with the yarn combined with two plies, and another with the same yarn combined with 4, 5, 6, 8, or as many plies as you like.

You can combine the thickness (gauge) and count you prefer.

I’ll also give a mathematical example of yarn gauge and count, starting with the premise that a 500g cone of 2/28,000 count yarn contains 7,000 meters of yarn. Therefore, there will be 1,400 meters in 100g.

If I knit it with two strands, that will become 3,500 meters in 500g, 700 meters in 100g.
If I knit it with four strands, that will become 1,750 meters in 500g, 350 meters in 100g.
And so on…

Of course, you have to be careful when working with needles because the needle can get caught in the middle of the threads and leave exposed strands, but this isn’t a problem for more experienced knitters and designers.

It’s hard work to knit such a fine yarn into multiple strands. But I have good news for you: from today, we can divide the cones.

We can’t combine it, but if you’d like, we can divide the 500g cone into five 100g cones (or two 250g cones, or three 166g cones, or four 125g cones) at no extra charge. Simply request it using the notes box that appears when you complete your order on our website.

This way, those with more dexterous knitting skills can also knit from the cones, taking the yarns directly from the cones.

As always, we recommend making a swatch and washing it before knitting. Cone yarn, especially machine yarn, is unwashed (treated), as knitters who use it in large quantities generally always wash the finished garment. It’s also advisable to knit untreated yarns on the knitting machine.

Ultimately, the result—in terms of feel, softness, and workability—will be the same as a thicker knitting yarn.
