Sustainability in Cashmere Production: A New Responsible Luxury

Sustainability in Cashmere Production: A New Responsible Luxury
Cashmere has always been synonymous with elegance and comfort. But today, those who choose this precious fiber also want to know where it comes from , how it is produced and above all if it respects the environment and people . In this article we take you behind the scenes of cashmere production, between artisanal tradition and modern challenges, to discover how it is transforming into a truly sustainable luxury.
📍 Where does cashmere come from?
Cashmere comes from the undercoat of Hircus goats, raised in cold areas such as Mongolia, China, India and Iran. Each goat produces only 150-200 grams of fiber per year. The harvest takes place in spring, during the moult, with a delicate and manual combing.
This makes cashmere rare, valuable… and also delicate to produce.
🌎 The hidden side: environmental impacts
With the increase in demand, intensive farming has taken over. And with it, several environmental problems:
-
Desertification : Goats tear up grass with their roots, and too many animals ruin pastures.
-
Emissions : more livestock = more greenhouse gases.
-
Water consumption : especially in the washing and dyeing phase.
The result? A heavy impact, especially in already fragile areas.
✅ Towards a more sustainable cashmere
The good news is that many companies are changing course. Here’s how:
🐐 Responsible Farming
Fewer goats per hectare, pasture rotation, land protection.
🔁 Regenerated Cashmere
More and more companies are reusing scraps and old garments to create new yarns. Less waste, more value.
🧾 Ethical certifications
Labels such as SFA (Sustainable Fibre Alliance) or GCS (Good Cashmere Standard) help to choose truly sustainable products.
⚙️ Low impact technologies
New dyeing methods reduce water consumption and chemical use.
🤝 People at the center
Sustainability also means social justice :
-
Paying farmers fairly
-
Train them on eco-friendly practices
-
Respect animal welfare
-
Valorising local communities
🧠 And you, what role do you have?
Yes, you too can make a difference:
-
Choose certified or regenerated cashmere
-
Support transparent brands
-
Prefer quality over quantity
Every purchase is a small choice of value.
