Why knit in times of stress?

It is not uncommon for a person who loves knitting to remember that, for example, a scarf was made after a break-up with someone, or after a death in the family. It’s a bit like saying that these objects contain emotions in every “point”. After the tragedy of September 11th in the United States, it was statistically found that many people who had not knitted for years, and people who were looking for comfort in something, returned to knitting, perhaps to dampen insecurity and ease the tension of such a serious fact.

But why should one believe that knitting can be useful during days of particular pain and stress? First of all, consider that when you knit you concentrate (let’s say you are even relatively forced to concentrate) on what is in your hands, and even if our thoughts are still present, there is still something you are creating, something that draws the attention of your mind, so that you can distract your attention from a possible situation of stress or tension, and no longer be concentrated on it.

Whether you do something for yourself or for someone else, knitting gently diverts your attention elsewhere, away from your stress.

The positive side is that you are creating, you are making something beautiful, and so different from eating chocolates or sitting in front of the TV after a bad day. Plus, you’ll also have something to show off after you do it. If you let off steam by eating chocolates, what will you have accomplished?

The hope is that those who knit do so mainly in happy moments, but as many knitting enthusiasts have discovered, this pleasant hobby is much more than a simple pastime to overcome the difficult moments of our lives. Knitting can be compared to a new yoga, or not, but as has been said, it is a gift that you will carry with you forever.
