How much yarn do you need for a baby sweater: simple guide + chart

How much yarn do you need for a child's sweater?

This is one of the questions I get asked most often by knitters. In Italy, we usually ask how many balls of yarn are needed. Abroad, however, the question is more precise: how many meters of yarn are needed to make a sweater. In this article, I will show you how to calculate the yarn needed for a child's sweater, using a simple reference table.

How to calculate how much yarn is needed for a child's sweater

The table below approximately indicates:
  • how many stitches there are in a 10 cm stockinette stitch swatch
  • how many meters of yarn are needed to make a sweater
These values are indicative, because everyone knits slightly differently.
  • Those with a tight tension will produce more stitches in the same space.
  • Those with a loose tension will get a swatch with fewer stitches.
For this reason, it is always important to make a swatch before starting the project.

How to use the yarn chart

Make a swatch and count the stitches in 10 cm. At this point:
  1. identify the child's age in the table
  2. check how many meters of yarn are needed for the sweater.
The yardage indicated refers to a basic stockinette stitch sweater. If you choose more elaborate stitches, such as cables or fancy stitches, remember that more yarn may be needed.

How to figure out how many meters of yarn you have

To know if the yarn you have at home is sufficient, you need to know the metric number of the yarn, also called the yarn count. This value allows you to calculate how many meters of yarn a cone or ball contains. In the video below, I explain in a simple way how to calculate the meters of yarn starting from the count. video Once you've done the calculation, you'll immediately understand if the yarn you have is enough to make the sweater.

Calculating balls of yarn

If you buy yarn in balls, the calculation is even simpler. The label will always indicate the yarn yield, i.e., how many meters the ball contains (usually 50g or 100g). This way you can easily calculate how many balls of yarn are needed for a child's sweater.
In summary: thanks to the table and the calculation of yarn meters, it will be much easier to understand how much yarn is needed to make a child's sweater, avoiding buying too much or too little. Alicja Kwartnik for Hircus Filati
