Quality Yarn for Sensitive Skin: Not Just for Babies

We all know how extremely delicate and sensitive baby skin is, easily prone to irritation and allergies. That's why choosing the yarn to create accessories like hats, sweaters, booties, socks, and blankets is essential.

These days I'm testing a fine machine yarn made of 95% extrafine merino wool and a very small percentage of synthetic fiber, which makes it more resistant to deformation during washing.

I will never tire of saying how exceptional fine machine yarns, worked by hand with multiple strands, truly are: incredibly soft, fluffy, and delicate to the touch.

The yarn I'm testing has a metric count of 27,500, which means that in 1 kg of yarn there are 27,500 meters. Does it seem like just a number? Let's make it more concrete with some practical calculations:

  • With 4 strands: 27,500 ÷ 4 = 6,875 m per kg → 687 m in 100 g
  • With 5 strands: 27,500 ÷ 5 = 5,500 m per kg → 550 m in 100 g
  • With 6 strands: 27,500 ÷ 6 = 4,584 m per kg → 458 m in 100 g

As you can see, the yield of this yarn is very high, which also makes it extremely advantageous in terms of quantity.

Regarding knitting:

  • With 4 strands you can use needles from 2.5 to 3.5 mm, depending on your tension and the type of project.
  • For hats and socks I use 2.5 mm needles (I knit loosely).
  • For larger accessories like blankets or shawls, I use 3-3.5 mm needles.

This yarn is so delicate that it is not only suitable for babies, but also for anyone with sensitive skin, prone to irritation, or for those who simply cannot tolerate "itchy" yarns.

This is an opportunity that won't last long.

I hope this information is useful for your next projects.
Happy creating and... happy yarns!
