How to hand knit recycled cashmere Nm 2/13
Recycled Nm 2/13 cashmere is not only suitable for knitting machines: it is also an ideal yarn for those who love to hand knit, creating unique and sustainable garments. Thanks to its versatility, it can be used with one, two or even more plies, offering very different results depending on the project.
Single-ply: lightness and refinement
If you knit Nm 2/13 with a single strand, you will obtain a very light and airy fabric, perfect for:
-
shawls, stoles and refined accessories,
-
summer sweaters or garments to be worn next to the skin,
-
openwork stitches and lace work.
👉 With a single ply, the yarn is well suited for thin needles (2.5 – 3 mm), but you can also go up in size if you want a softer and more drapey effect.
⚠️ Remember: being a recycled yarn, the fibres are shorter than new cashmere. This means that the thread is a little more delicate: work carefully, without pulling too much, and maintain a soft tension.
Two-ply: perfect balance
Working with two plies is the most recommended for hand knitting, because it offers the right compromise between lightness and consistency.
With two strands you obtain a fabric that is:
-
soft and full-bodied,
-
more resistant and stable,
-
ideal for sweaters, cardigans and winter accessories.
👉 The best result is obtained with needles 3.5 – 4 mm, depending on your hand and the stitch chosen.
Multiple plies: warmth and structure
If you want a very warm and enveloping garment, you can work Nm 2/13 with 3 or 4 plies. This solution is perfect for:
-
heavy men's or outdoor sweaters,
-
hats, scarves and winter accessories,
-
cable stitches, ribs and structured patterns.
👉 With multiple plies, you can comfortably go up to needles 4.5 – 5 mm, obtaining a full, compact and luxurious fabric.
-
Always swatch: try different combinations of plies and needles to find the result you like best.
-
Pay attention to tension: recycled cashmere, being more delicate, should be worked without pulling, maintaining a regular rhythm.
-
Final treatment: after washing, the knit "blooms," gaining softness and volume. It is this phase that makes the finished garment unique.
Nm 2/13 recycled cashmere combines sustainability, quality and versatility. It allows you to create customised garments, from the lightest summer shawl to the warmest winter sweater, with all the softness and preciousness of cashmere.
With a few balls of yarn and a little creativity, you can bring to life unique projects that tell a story of craftsmanship and respect for the environment.
